Namecheap: Connect Namecheap Domain with Wix

Connect Namecheap with Wix

Connect Namecheap Domain with Wix

Connecting a Namecheap domain with Wix is a 2-part integration process.

The first part requires you to Add your custom domain through Wix website while the second part is for you to Configure the DNS through Namecheap or your DNS provider.

The second part varies depending who’s hosting the DNS of your domain. But to make a long story short, you either need to add Wix DNS resource records like A record and CNAME(Pointing method) or redirect your domain to Wix name servers(DNS method).

I’m using the terms Pointing method and DNS methods based on Wix vocabulary, but those have different meaning for other providers.

If you’re a beginner, I recommend to use DNS method. This way, the Wix support team can help you with DNS and website concerns at the same time.

Redirecting your domain to Wix nameservers will allow them to host the DNS and easily configure it on your behalf.

But if you’re already comfortable or have a lot of experience managing the DNS on your own, then you may use the Pointing method instead.

Before you begin:
You must upgrade your Wix site to a Premium Plan before you can connect your domain.

Part 2: Configure DNS via Namecheap or DNS provider

This part is where you need to add the A and CNAME record or redirect the domain to Wix name servers. This can be done either directly through Enom or through a DNS provider where you domain points to.

Pointing method / A and CNAME

1. Sign into your Namecheap account (The Sign In option is available in the header of the page).

2. Select Domain List from the left sidebar and click on the Manage button next to your domain: Connect Namecheap to Wix - Domain list 3. Navigate to the Advanced DNS tab at the top of the page: Connect Namecheap to Wix - Advanced DNS 4. Find the Host records section and click on the Add New Record button (not able to edit Host Records?):   Connect Namecheap to Wix - Add new record

5. Select A Record for Type and enter the Host you would like to point to an IP address:

Note: These are example values.

@ – used to point a root domain (yourdomain.tld) to the IP address:

A Record | @ |  23.236.62.147

www – is selected when it is needed to point www.yourdomain.tld to the IP address:

CNAME Record | www |  www170.wixdns.net

6. Once all details are inserted, save them using the Save changes green icon.

Normally, it takes 30 minutes for newly created records to take effect.

Once you’ve done so, you might also want to make sure that there are no conflicting records set for the same host and remove them, if there are any. The records you need to check may be of Unmasked/Masked/Permanent Redirect, A or CNAME record types.

Here is the example of conflicting records:

DNS method / Name servers

To connect a domain to a Wix name servers, you need to set these nameservers as Custom for your domain.

You can do that in the following way:

1) After signing into your account, select Domain List from the left sidebar and click the Manage button next to your domain in the list. Then find the Nameservers section and select Custom DNS from the drop-down menu:

2) After that, enter Wix nameservers (ex. ns4.wixdns.net and ns5.wixdns.net) one by one in each line. When the nameservers are entered, press the green checkmark to save changes:

Verify Your Domain Connection

Once you’ve updated your domain’s DNS records, return to the Domains page in your Wix account and click Verify Connection. Due to DNS propagation delay, you may not be able to verify the domain connection immediately.

DNS Propagation

All DNS changes may take up 48 hours to fully take effect online so you may not see the changes you just did in the domain name. Be patient and give it more time to propagate in the entire internet. Given that the DNS was properly configured, it’s just a matter of time before your domain connects with Wix.

Check this out if you have another domain from a third party domain registrar you wish to connect with Wix from a different 3rd-party domain registrar.
