This Connect a Google Domain to Wix guide can be done in two ways. This is relatively simple if the first method is applicable for you.
The first method is through Google Domains easy-connect feature while the other is through Manual integration (creating DNS records).
Let’s start with the first option.
Heads up:
The Wix free plan has no capability to connect a domain to a Wix website. It is a must to upgrade your plan to a Premium one for this process to work.
Method 1: Google Domains Easy-connect process
Connecting Google Domains with Wix via easy integration will work if your domain name and Wix website are registered under the same Google account.
If not, you can either skip this Easy-connect process or share the domain management of your domain to the same account where your Wix website was created from.
This workaround allows Google Domains to find the website you created through Wix under the same Google account.
If your domain and Wix website are in the same account, proceed to the steps below.
If you have more than one Google account in browser session, you will be prompted to select the Google account that owns your domain.
Click Accept if Wix asks permission to view your Google account information.
Click Accept if Wix asks permission to manage your Google domain resource records.
Log in to your existing Wix account.
This is the same account as your Google Domains account.
To verify your domain is connected, review site address setting inside the Settings tab. If not, click on Manage Domains to set it up.
Publish your site and test your domain address in a browser.
If the domain URL loads successfully, Congratulations! You’ve successfully set up your Wix site and connected your domain.
DNS changes may take 24 – 48 hours to fully take effect across the entire internet so you may need to wait a little bit more before seeing your website online.
Method 2: Manual integration
This manual integration is a 2-part domain mapping process.
The first part requires you to add your custom domain through Wix while the second part is for you to mapping your domain to Wix Resource records or Name servers.
The second part varies depending who’s the DNS provider of your domain, but in a nutshell, you need to create DNS records like A record and CNAME(Pointing method) or redirect your domain to Wix name servers(DNS method).
Don’t get confused. The Pointing and DNS methods are terms used by Wix, but those may have different meaning for other providers.
If you’re a beginner, I recommend to use DNS method. This way, the Wix support team can help you with DNS and website concerns at the same time.
Redirecting your domain to Wix nameservers will allow them to host the DNS and easily configure it on your behalf.
But if you’re already comfortable or have a lot of experience managing the DNS on your own, then you may use the Pointing method instead.
Click Connect a domain you already own. Note: If you already have a domain in your account, click Add an Existing Domain, then select Connect a domain you already own.
Select the site you want to connect your domain to and click Next.
Enter the domain name.
Click DNS next to Connection Method at the bottom of the page.
Select DNS or Pointing.
Click Confirm.
Click Next.
Wix will display the necessary CNAME and A record or Name servers where you can point your domain name to.
Pointing / A & CNAME
DNS / Name servers
These are just examples, you may see different values for your account.
Part 2: Configure DNS through Google Domains
Choose between the two integration options.
The main difference between these two is Pointing allows Google Domains to manage the domain settings while DNS method gives Wix that capability.
Pointing / A & CNAME
This is the method where you need to create an A and CNAME record through Google Domains.
Under Name servers, select Use custom name servers.
In the Name server field, enter a custom name server(ex. ns4.wixdns.net).
Click Add to add more name servers(ex. ns5.wixdns.net).
Click Save.
Verify Your Domain Connection
Once done with either Method 1 or 2, return to the Domains page in your Wix account and click Verify Connection.
Propagation delay
All DNS changes may take 24 – 48 hours to fully take effect across the entire internet. This delay is also known as DNS propagation.
If the DNS has been properly configured and the domain has been added successfully through Wix, I’m positive that it’s just a matter of time before you will see your domain integrated to your website.
