Name.com: Connect Name.com Domain to Wix

Connect Name.com Domain to Wix

Connect Name.com Domain with Wix

Connecting a Name.com domain with Wix is a 2-part integration process.

The first part requires you to Add your custom domain through Wix website while the second part is for you to Configure the DNS through Name.com or your DNS provider.

The second part varies depending who’s hosting the DNS of your domain. But to make a long story short, you either need to add Wix DNS resource records like A record and CNAME(Pointing method) or redirect your domain to Wix name servers(DNS method).

I’m using the terms Pointing method and DNS methods based on Wix vocabulary, but those have different meaning for other providers.

If you’re a beginner, I recommend to use DNS method. This way, the Wix support team can help you with DNS and website concerns at the same time.

Redirecting your domain to Wix nameservers will allow them to host the DNS and easily configure it on your behalf.

But if you’re already comfortable or have a lot of experience managing the DNS on your own, then you may use the Pointing method instead.

Note: Don’t forget to upgrade your Wix website to a Premium Plan. This is a requirement before you can connect your domain to Wix.

Part 1: Add Your Custom Domain through Wix

  1. Go to the Domains page in your Wix account.
  2. Click Connect a domain you already own. Note: If you already have a domain in your account, click Add an Existing Domain, then select Connect a domain you already own.
  3. Select the site you want to connect your domain to and click Next.
  4. Enter the domain name.
  5. Click DNS next to Connection Method at the bottom of the page.
  6. Select DNS or Pointing.
  7. Click Confirm.
  8. Click Next.

Wix will display the necessary CNAME and A record or Name servers where you can point your domain name to.

Part 2: Configure DNS via Name.com or DNS provider

This part is where you need to add the A and CNAME record or redirect the domain to Wix name servers.

This can be done either directly through Name.com or through a DNS provider where you domain points to.

Pointing method / A and CNAME

You should edit or add Wix A and CNAME records. Here are example Wix resource records:

Host NameTypeData
@ A23.236.62.147

To create an A and CNAME records, please follow these steps:

  2. From the top menu, click the My Domains tab to the top right.
  3. Click on the domain name you wish to create a CNAME record for.
  4. Click Manage DNS Records.
  5. Here you will add the desired CNAME record, provided by your host.

    • Select CNAME in the Type drop-down menu.
    • Enter the subdomain in the Host field (www).
    • Type in Wix CNAME value in the Answer field.
    • Enter the desired TTL, or just leave it at 300 (default)
    • Click the Add Record button.

    • Leave the Host field blank
    • Enter or copy+paste Wix IP address into the Answer field.
    • Leave TTL as 300 (default)
    • Click the blue Add Record button.

Redirect or point your domain to Wix name servers. Here are sample Wix name servers:

To set your name servers, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into your Name.com account.

  3. Click the domain name you would like to manage.
  4. Click Manage Nameservers, in the Nameservers column.
  5. Click the Delete All button to clear the current nameservers away. Alternatively you can also Delete them one-by-one by clicking Delete, on the right-hand side.
  6. Enter the Wix nameservers in the empty box labeled Add Nameserver and then click the blue Add button. Be sure to only add one at a time.
  7. Click Save Changes.

Note: If you do not delete the old nameservers before adding the new, it will create conflicts and the associated website/email will not work. You will need at least two nameservers for the domain to work. Once you have changed them, it will take roughly 48 hours for the changes to propagate.

Verify Your Domain Connection

Once you’ve updated your domain’s DNS records, return to the Domains page in your Wix account and click Verify Connection. Due to DNS propagation delay, you may not be able to verify the domain connection immediately.

DNS Propagation

All DNS changes may take 24 – 48 hours to fully take effect across the entire internet. This delay is also known as DNS propagation.

If the DNS has been properly configured and the domain has been added successfully through Wix, it’s just a matter of time before you see the domain integrated with your Wix website.

Check this out if you have another domain from a third party domain registrar you wish to connect with Wix from a different 3rd-party domain registrar.
