Connect 1and1 (IONOS) Domain Name To Shopify
If your domain name was registered through a 3rd-party domain registrar, you need to accomplish two things to successfully link your domain to your Shopify store.
- Add Shopify’s Resource records in the domain’s DNS.
- Set up or add your domain through Shopify.
Based on Shopify’s help center, here are the the DNS records you need to add/modify:
- A record should point to Shopify’s IP address, which is 23.227.38.65
- www CNAME record should point to shops.myshopify.com
How or where can you add these DNS resource records?
DNS records can be added or modified through the domain’s DNS provider, the process varies depending who’s hosting it.
1.) Add Shopify’s Resource Records
If you’re using 1and1 IONOS to manage the DNS of your domain, follow the steps below to redirect your domain to Shopify.
If not, check who the DNS provider of your domain and contact their team to add these DNS resource records:

IONOS: Adding CNAME record
You can configure the CNAME record right in the Domains & SSL section of the Control Panel.
1. Log in to IONOS and go to the Domains & SSL section.
2. Next to the desired domain, click on the gear symbol under Actions and select Manage Subdomains.
3. Next to the desired subdomain, click on the gear symbol under Actions and select DNS.
4. Click ADD RECORD and select CNAME.
5. Enter the desired subdomain in the Hostname field: www.
6. In the Point to field, type the desired entry: shops.myshopify.com.
7. Optional: Select the desired TTL.
8. Click Save.
IONOS: Adding a A record
To add a new A record, follow these steps:
1. In the Domains section of the Control Panel, next to your desired domain, click on the gear symbol under Actions and select DNS.
2. Click Add Record and select the A type.
3. In the Host Name field, specify the desired host. To create the A record for your domain, enter the @ character.
4. In the Points to field, enter the desired IPv4 address: 23.227.38.65.
5. Optional: Select the desired TTL. By default, your changes will become active immediately.
6. Below the Preview for www row, do not use the same record for www.
7. Click Save.
2.) Add Custom Domain in Shopify
Once you’re done adding the DNS records, you may now add your domain name to your Shopify account.
- Go to Shopify and Login to your account.
- Select Online Store in the dashboard.
- Click Domains.
- Click on Connect existing domain.
- Enter your custom domain name (example.com).
- Click Next.
- Click Verify Connection.
3.) DNS Propagation Delay
If Shopify is unable to verify the DNS records yet, give it several more minutes before attempting to verify the connection again.
Any DNS changes may take from few minutes up to 48 hours to fully take effect across the entire internet.
